Hong Kong asset management and lifestyle firm the Allen Perkins Group has built environmental protection ideas and energy saving devices into its new office in Kowloon Tong, in premises converted from a former private residence and featuring a large and historic garden.

Group managing director Elsa Pau said it was natural instinct to ¡§go green¡¦¡¦ if one respects and appreciates the environment. ¡§That¡¦s why when we were looking for a new location, we decided on a stand-alone old private residence, away from the tall buildings and the noise and pollution of the city¡¦s commercial districts.¡¦¡¦

Apart from reusing as many of the old structures and materials as possible, Ms Pau insisted on non-toxic paint for the walls, natural staining for the wooden cabinets and coconut fibre carpeting. Lighting and air conditioning are zoned for energy efficiency; the toilets are water saving by having a half-flush option; and recycling is paramount in all office practices. ¡§We really need to make more of a conscious effort to stop using products that are not recyclable,¡¦¡¦ she said.

The garden surrounding the office ¡V where staff members enjoy breakfast and can retreat to for coffee throughout the day ¡V is pivotal to the overall concept.

¡§We have opted to keep our garden full of green plants instead of going with easier to maintain concrete grounds. Besides providing a home to some rare plant species, we are also proud to have a pair of century-old camphor trees, which we have kept intact and revitalised, and we have regular residents of the winged-type that nest there.¡¦¡¦

Ms Pau said simple concepts can mean a lot. ¡§It may take a little extra effort but it¡¦s worth it in the long run. It¡¦s all about improving the quality of life for our generation and preserving it for generations to come.¡¦¡¦
