Hong Kong・s well-developed network of social and recreation clubs is an important element of the executive lifestyle, according to Jim Thompson, chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong.
:One of the joys of Hong Kong is that it is so easy to get around, you can enjoy a full business and social life with no strain at all,; he said.
:Clubs are important to the lifestyle as they provide a certain comfort and elegance, whether for entertaining, when taking the family out for a lovely dinner or just a quiet drink after work.
:Most of the business people, local and international, go to Hong Kong・s clubs on a regular basis to enjoy the perfect atmosphere and because they・re the place where people meet.;
For Elizabeth Bosher, vice-president of the Ladies Recreation Club, her club feels like :a home away from home;. This reflects the club objective that has not changed since its establishment in 1883 as one of the first private clubs in Hong Kong, she said.
:The club was established at the request of a group of expatriate women who wanted the opportunity for healthy, outdoor recreation. We are first and foremost a family club, and while people join clubs for lots of different reasons, what I like is that it feels like a home away from home. The atmosphere is so relaxed I can just drop in whenever I like.;
Club facilities include tennis, swimming, dining, social activities, indoor sports, a women・s beauty centre and lots of courses for all the family. A building programme currently underway is addressing the needs of older children, providing a bowling alley and social rooms for teenagers within a new clubhouse.
