Three Silicon Valley enterprises are among the first group of companies to begin operations in the newly opened HK$3.3 billion (US$423 million) Hong Kong Science and Technology Park, using Hong Kong as a base to strengthen their presence in the Asia-Pacific region.

The three companies - Advanced Analogic Technologies Inc. (AnalogicTech), Pericom Semiconductor Corporation (Pericom), and REnex Technology Limited (REnex) ˇV are carrying out research and development.

"We made the decision to establish our operationˇ¦s headquarters in the Science Park to strengthen our presence in the important Asian region, to locate our operations closer to our customers and to our manufacturing partners, and to enhance our work here in the US," said Richard K. Williams, CEO and CTO of AnalogicTech.

Alex Hui, CEO of Pericom, said the facilities and support offered by the Science Park would enhance the capabilities of the company's Hong Kong Technology Centre. ˇ§The centre will have a strong design team to support Pericom's product development and will also play a major role in supporting our Asia marketing effort and system applications. The facility at the park will strengthen our presence in the important region of Asia-Pacific/Greater China.ˇ¨

C.D Tam, Hong Kong Science and Technology Park Corporationˇ¦s chief executive officer, said the presence of the three Silicon Valley companies clearly demonstrates Hong Kong's commitment to high tech development and reinforced its ability to attract high-tech investment.

ˇ§These corporations share the same visions and have strategic long-term commitment to build up their technology base and core competence in Hong Kong,ˇ¨ Mr Tam said.

The Science Park will build on these strengthens by attracting a critical mass of quality companies and talented people who will continue to raise the capabilities of Hong Kong's industries to new levels. The goal is to form clusters of overseas and local technology-based enterprises operating in the key areas of electronics, information technology, biotechnology and precision engineering.

Primary tasks carried out by tenant companies include technology-related research, development, marketing, operation, product management and associated value-added activities. Mass production-type operations are not encouraged.
