Hong Kong has been selected as the shooting location for action scenes for the sequel to Hollywood blockbuster Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, according to the Television and Entertainment Licensing Authority (TELA).

TELA's principal entertainment standard control officer Camy Mak said the film starring American actress Angelina Jolie would help to promote Hong Kong internationally as a premier shooting location.

"International film projects coming to Hong Kong bring expertise, technical know-how, and help to promote Hong Kong's tourism spots. They further enhance Hong Kong's role as Asia's film hub," Ms Mak said. Filming is scheduled to start early next year.

Hong Kong has one of the most dynamic film industries in the world, and is among the largest film exporters, according to the Trade Development Council's assistant chief economist, Joseph Tsang. In a recent report on Creative Industries in Hong KongMr Tsang said Hong Kong was the fourth largest film producing economy and topped the world in terms of per capita production in 2000.

"In addition to being an economic force in themselves, creative industries are also important providers of creative input to other economic activities in sustaining Hong Kong's role as an international trading hub and financial centre," added Mr Tsang.

The TDC report defines creative industries as "industries which have their origin in individual creativity, skill and talent, and which have a potential for wealth and job creation through the generation and exploitation of intellectual property".

Mr Tsang added that Hong Kong is regarded as a creative centre in Asia. "It has a robust film and music industry with action films having attained brand status in the region's entertainment markets."

Major creative industries in Hong Kong include: advertising, architecture, art and antiques, comics, design, designer fashion, film, television, game software, music, performing arts, publishing, software and IT services.

The report said the contribution of the creative industries in Hong Kong was increasingly recognised. As of March, the industries had a 3.7 per cent share of the job market and 7.9 per cent of gross domestic product.
