Hong Kong-based Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts is opening its first hotels outside the Asia-Pacific region during a three-year expansion targeting the Gulf.

Shangri-La has signed a management agreement with UAE-based Al Jabber Group to operate the five-star Shangri-La Hotel in Dubai which is scheduled to open in February 2003. Shangri-La's CEO and managing director Giovanni Angelini said this was an exciting opportunity for the group to develop a presence in the Gulf.

"Dubai is an attractive and popular destination for Asian and European travellers, making it the ideal location for us to open our first hotel in the region and to debut Shangri-La's hospitality," he said.

Its 250-room four-star sister hotel Traders Hotel, Dubai, will open in September 2003. Located near the Dubai International Airport and the business district, this will be the sixth hotel in the group's growing Traders brand, which was launched by Shangri-La in 1989.

Shangri-La's Barr Al Jissah Resort situated on a 124-hectare site overlooking the Gulf of Oman will be completed in mid-2005.

Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts currently manages 38 hotels in the Chinese mainland, Fiji, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand.
