| 'Nerve centre' a rich feeding ground for business ( 06/01/2003 ) | |||||||||
"One of Hong Kong's great strengths is its position in southern China," Mr Newcomb said. "It is vital that we keep developing more "arteries" such as the Zhuhai bridge, so that we can feed ourselves with the rich business potential in that region." OneWorld, the manufacturing arm of US-based promotions company SPARK, has offices in Hong Kong and New York, and plans to open a new office in Shenzhen before Chinese New Year 2003. The company designs and manufactures original promotional products for world-famous brands such as Lancome, American Express, McDonald's and Absolut. "We look at products that already exist and try to make them better and more interesting," said Mr Newcomb, who has personally invented and patented some of the products, including a "levitating" clock. OneWorld recently produced five million radios in 100 days - perhaps the largest single order for radios ever made in China. The company will also be the first in the market to produce low cost AutoScan AM/FM radios.
Hong Kong's excellent communications infrastructure, high broadband penetration and geographical location make it an ideal place to do business, according to Mr Newcomb. "You can go almost anywhere in the world from Hong Kong International Airport, and your customers can easily get to you. The whole world comes to Hong Kong," he added. Mr Newcomb said that the Hong Kong-Plus business model has been around for a long time. However, he noted that the availability of high-quality products from China is increasing every day. "China is getting wealthier and wealthier. The more I see what is going on in China and what opportunities there are, the more confident I become." Related links: | |||||||||
