AustCham chairman Alan Johnson, celebrating Australia Day on January 26, says there never has been a better time for Australians to do business in Hong Kong

The number of Australian businesses using Hong Kong as their regional headquarters has soared by over 70 per cent since 1999, according to the Australian Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong (AustCham).

AustCham chairman Alan Johnson says: "Hong Kong has never been more competitive or in a better position to welcome Australian business than right now. We are seeing continuous arrivals of new businesses with further growth in the more established companies."

AustCham reports that the drop in rental prices for commercial space and residential houses, along with competitive staff costs, have enabled companies to confidently invest in their workforce from a wider choice of well-qualified personnel.

"Hong Kong remains the major gateway to Greater China," Mr Johnson said. "With increased opportunity for business since China's entry to the WTO, Hong Kong's competitive advantage is assured."

Mr Johnson asserts that the pillars of Hong Kong's success remain in place: the free flow of information, people and capital; the rule of law; a sound and accountable government; and a strong infrastructure.

"It is the responsibility of the government to provide the basic platform and infrastructure, and it is the responsibility of business to build and prosper from that platform. Australian business in Hong Kong is doing just that," he added.

AustCham in Hong Kong represents over 480 Australian companies and a community of 50,000. AustCham member companies employ over 200,000 people, or 6.2 per cent of the workforce in Hong Kong.
