Aztech CEO Michael Mun hopes to attract overseas engineers to Hong Kong to work in the company’s new R&D facility

Singapore-listed modem maker Aztech Systems is expanding its Hong Kong operations, doubling the workforce and making it the base for research and development (R&D).

"We have two factories in southern China, so Hong Kong is the ideal place for our sales and R&D activities," president and CEO Michael Mun said.

The firm has moved into Hong Kong Science Park at Sai Kung in the New Territories, an environment Mr Mun describes as "inspiring" for his engineers and very conducive to R&D.

The park is also close to Chinese University, giving the company access to the university's own R&D staff. Aztech is headquartered in Singapore, where its R&D facilities have previously been based. The Hong Kong office was originally set up as a procurement office.

Aztech has a factory in Dongguan in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) in southern China, and another facility in Shenzhen, across the border from Hong Kong. Mr Mun says the Science Park's location is ideal as it is halfway between downtown Hong Kong and the two plants.

Hong Kong's close proximity to the PRD results in easy communication with the Dongguan factory. A leased line connection between the two locations makes it possible for him to phone factory staff without having to dial an IDD number.

With this new facility, Mr Mun hopes to attract overseas engineers to Hong Kong. He said he plans to double his workforce in Hong Kong by adding about 20 people - mostly engineers - in the next six months.

To accommodate the increased workforce, Aztech's new premises takes up 10,000 square feet, compared to its previous office of 1,500 square feet.
