US-based pizza chain California Pizza Kitchen (CPK) has brought its successful brand to Hong Kong, opening its first restaurant in Tsim Sha Tsui.

Whipped up by Hong Kong's favourable investment environment, the company plans a rapid expansion with at least two more restaurants in the pipeline.

"From an investment perspective, Hong Kong offers great opportunities with its attractive low tax system, good infrastructure, and efficient and professional workforce," said Lucy Prananto, president and CEO of Golden Pillars (HK) Ltd,
the chain's Hong Kong development and management company.

"We are convinced that all these factors, including CPK's unique and premium branding, will contribute to our success in the local market."

CPK is based in Los Angeles, California.  Golden Pillars (HK) Ltd is a subsidiary of the Singapore-based Golden Pillars Holdings, which owns the franchise rights for CPK in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Hong Kong.

Ms Prananto pointed out that the sophisticated tastes of Hong Kong people means they are always on the lookout for new culinary experiences.  "I am confident Hong Kong will welcome CPK's commitment to providing premium quality food with ingredients freshly prepared daily, and a unique menu at reasonable prices," she said.

The CPK outlet in Tsim Sha Tsui employs 45 local staff.  On future expansion, Ms Prananto said: "Two additional outlets are planned, with the next one scheduled to open on Hong Kong Island."

Referring to the product's uniqueness, president and CEO of CPK Fred Hipp, said: "Central to the whole CPK concept is the redefinition of the traditional pizza.  We take familiar flavors and tastes and translate them on a great pizza crust."

Hong Kong has over 7,000 restaurants, covering virtually every international cuisine. Director-general of Invest Hong Kong Mike Rowse said the new restaurant would further enhance Hong Kong's position as the region's gourmet paradise.
