Support from the international business community in Hong Kong has been strong throughout the Sars outbreak, with heads of chambers of commerce confident that their nationals will continue to choose Hong Kong as their location of choice in Asia.

As well as publishing full-page advertisements in Hong Kong's leading newspapers, chambers of commerce and trade associations have, through their business networks in their countries of origin, succeeded in promoting a more realistic view of Hong Kong.

Ten heads of Hong Kong's international Chambers of Commerce also spoke to the wider community through a series of televised messages.

"Members of The American Chamber of Commerce are totally committed to Hong Kong and will continue to look on this city as their best option for investment in Asia," said Jim Thompson, the chamber's chairman. "The completely transparent handling of the challenge presented by Sars plus the high level of medical professionalism displayed actually enhances Hong Kong's reputation as a city we can trust to deal with unexpected challenges."

Support from the British community came through Christopher Hammerbeck, the British Chamber of Commerce's executive director. "The Sars outbreak, serious though it is, is not a show-stopper. We are very confident about Hong Kong. Together, British business and Hong Kong people, have a tremendous future in store for us," he said in a televised address.

President of Japanese Chamber of Commerce, Ryoto Honjo, said, "We are not only business partners but also members of Hong Kong community. Hong Kong people have shown effort and unity against Sars and we are particularly impressed by the medical staff and the health care teams."

Reinforcing the reasons why international business people continue to live and work here, Janet de Silva, President of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce said, "Through the last few weeks, Hong Kong has proven it is a modern world-class city, with excellent medical, communication and business infrastructure that ensures we can move fast and effectively in tackling a serious situation like Sars. So, let's work together to solve this."
