A leading retailer of Japanese confectioneries Minamoto Kitchoan recently opened a fourth shop in the commercial district of Central aiming to establish its brand firmly in Hong Kong before its expansion into the Chinese mainland.

The president of Minamoto Kitchoan Co Ltd Takushi Okada said: "Hong Kong is a major economic centre in Asia. Minamoto Kitchoan aims at firmly establishing its brand name here, bringing new and imaginative desserts to the market."

Minamoto Kitchoan makes traditional "wagashi" confectioneries with natural Japanese ingredients and dried fruits. The company already has three successful stores in Hong Kong, Tsimshatshui and Causeway Bay and intends to open four additional outlets within this year.

The company also plans to use Hong Kong as its base to enter the Chinese mainland. "We plan to enter the mainland market around 2005 and introduce our products and culture to the Chinese people," said Mr Okada.

Director-general of InvestHK Mike Rowse  who visited the new Central store said Minamoto Kitchoan's expansion in Hong Kong is a vote of confidence in Hong Kong as the retail capital of Asia. He added that this "traditional culinary art of Japanese confectioneries is a unique shopping experience which adds colour and variety to the entire retail sector in Hong Kong."
