Paul Gross established European Motors to serve the Hong Kong market for high performance sports cars and prestigious classic vehicles

After serving eight years with the Hong Kong Police Force from 1972 to 1980, Paul Gross saw an opportunity to combine his passion for luxury motor cars of distinction, with running his own business. He established European Motors Limited to serve the local market for high performance used sports cars and prestigious classic vehicles. Recently, the firm acquired exclusive distributorship in Hong Kong for the world famous Caterham Super 7 and the new 21 from Caterham Cars Ltd, offering its full range of vehicles (including race cars) and accessories from stock or to order. Mr Gross also exports exclusive and high-end vehicles to a growing number of countries including Australia, France, Germany, New Zealand and the UK.

"In addition to being famous for having the world's highest ratio of Rolls Royces per head of population, Hong Kong is increasingly being recognised as an important centre for sourcing classic and second hand high-performance vehicles for both domestic and export markets. In general, high value cars in Hong Kong have low mileage, are unaffected by corrosion and are well maintained. These are decisive factors when a client is considering buying a car and having it shipped overseas.

Hong Kong's reputation for sophistication, good taste and appreciation of quality certainly includes cars. Considering its size, Hong Kong has one of the largest concentrations of BMWs, Mercedes, Ferraris, Porsche and classic cars such as Jaguars, MGBs, Bentleys and Rolls Royces found anywhere in the world. The market for used performance and prestigious vehicles is further stimulated by a comparatively high turnover of new vehicles resulting in the availability of used cars at attractive prices.

Shipping vehicles from Hong Kong is uncomplicated and efficient. Customs inspections and declarations are clear-cut and paper work is kept to a minimum. With so many shippers to work with, the time of export to the time of delivery can be surprisingly quick. The vehicles that we export are mainly sports cars, coupes, convertibles and top-of-the-range performance cars manufactured in Europe. There are even rare or limited edition models that can be found in Hong Kong that would be difficult to source elsewhere.

Professional workforce

Ensuring that a car is well maintained or receives a thorough examination prior to export is very simple. Hong Kong has a professional workforce of a highly trained mechanics, electronic specialists and brand-name specific motor vehicle engineers who are knowledgeable about all sections of the car industry.

Before any vehicle is sold or exported our team of mechanics ensures that it is given a complete check over and any work that needs to be done receives attention. We also work closely with customers to make sure that the car they are buying meets their expectations. If the car is being purchased for export, we confirm that it meets all the regulations and import requirements of the final destination.

Over the past decade we have developed a reputation that we are proud of and one that we intend to keep through supplying exactly what our clients worldwide require ─ which is a service that is second to none. We only source and secure the very best used vehicles available for our customers. Our web site also plays an intricate role in sourcing and selling through conveniently keeping us in contact with a wide range of people.

Despite the challenges all business face, with hard work and a clear goal Hong Kong is a place where it is possible to achieve success. There is so little red tape or official interference. Having lived in Hong Kong for 30 years it still retains the same buzz and vibrancy as it did when I arrived. I enjoy driving in Hong Kong. Personally, my favourite cars are BMWs but these days I leave it up to my four children to choose which car we drive and explore Hong Kong in at the weekends.
