| Many reasons why 'the best place in Asia' beckons | |||||||||
In addition to being one of the safest cities in the world, there are many reasons why Hong Kong offers a preferred lifestyle for expatriates - among them its world-class infrastructure, quality health care and excellent schools. Proximity to mainland China - one of the fastest growing economies in the world - is another advantage. "Senior executives will happily base themselves and their families in Hong Kong, commuting to China whenever necessary," says Ms von Eldik. "Hong Kong has become the destination of choice for many relocating to this part of the world." Another major drawcard is the family-friendly, cosmopolitan culture, she adds. "Children growing up in Hong Kong become citizens of the world, and are much more accepting of other nationalities. They are interested in other people and have friends who originate from dozens of different countries. " Ms von Eldik arrived from Virginia some 30 years ago and launched Compass, her third start-up, in the late 1990s. The company and its associated web site have found a niche market providing the assistance required by newly arriving expatriates and their families. All about smooth relocations "We launched the web site listing everything we felt people needed to know about Hong Kong, because there was no existing dedicated site providing this information," she said. "I have assisted hundreds of corporate families achieve smooth relocations over the years, and the online information goes a long way to providing peace of mind before they arrive. We then provide on the ground assistance once they're here." The site features some 80 categories of information about Hong Kong, enabling clients to source information on subjects ranging from basic questions such as where to live and where to send children to school, to where to source organic foodstuffs or indulge in the best martini the city has to offer. "When moving abroad you need to feel that you know enough about your destination city to live and function in it. People want to efficiently continue their lives - to do business, live and thrive - regardless of where they are, be it Paris, Berlin, New York, Shanghai or Hong Kong." Compass also moves beyond simply promoting urban Hong Kong, informing clients about the little-known, picture-postcard areas such as Sai Kung in the New Territories, and Aberdeen on the south side of Hong Kong Island. "I take people on the seven minute drive through the Aberdeen tunnel and they are amazed by what they see after we emerge, describing it as Hong Kong's Mediterranean coast,"" Ms von Eldik said. "I think expatriates are now starting to return in increasing numbers, and that Hong Kong will remain a preferred place of residence here in South-East Asia. "Over the next couple of years we will see Hong Kong grow stronger than ever, especially with regard to the luxury end of the expatriate market, and this is the silver lining following all that has occurred in recent times."
