| Fashion brand grows in gateway to China ( 02/06/2003 ) | |||||||||
The opening of its second boutique in Hong Kong is part of a plan to expand in Asia, targeting the growing numbers of upmarket consumers in the region. "Hong Kong consumers are sophisticated, and they love to shop. Hong Kong is also an international city with a solid infrastructure in place to support the growth of our business," said David Ting managing director of Globalluxe Limited, the exclusive distributor for Kate Spade in Hong Kong. The Kate Spade fashion collection includes handbags, shoes, small leather goods, and beauty products. It already has a significant presence in Japan, and further boutiques are planned for Hong Kong and Singapore. Outside of Asia, the brand is sold throughout the US, Canada, Europe, and Australia. Kate Spade also intends to use Hong Kong as a platform for expansion into the Chinese mainland, with its growing population of more affluent, brand-conscious consumers. "Many travelling mainland customers come to Hong Kong not only to shop, but also to learn about the latest brands. Hong Kong is definitely a gateway to the China market," Mr Ting said. Reflecting on the current market conditions, he added: "Despite the economic challenges in the region, we feel these markets have tremendous long-term growth potential for strong brands." | |||||||||
