Electronic ticketing pioneered in Hong Kong is leading the way in modernising the international public transport sector
The electronic ticketing system for Holland's public transport services will soon undergo a facelift, helped by Hong Kong's urban service subway provider the MTR Corporation (MTRC) and its subsidiary company Octopus Cards Limited.

Together with a global consortia, MTRC was selected earlier this year by Trans Link Systems, a company commissioned by Dutch Railways, the public transport firm Connexxion and the municipal transport authorities for the Hague (HTM ), Amsterdam (GVB ) and Rotterdam (RET). The project covers the design, supply, implementation and maintenance of the electronic ticketing system for Holland's rail, metro, bus and tram services.

The landmark project will see Hong Kong's innovative, contact-less smart card system replicated in Holland. Preliminary work started in May 2003 and the first phase of the project is expected to complete by late 2005, with roll out to the whole of the Netherlands transport system by the end of 2007.

MTRC chairman and chief executive officer Jack So Chak Kwong said the project is the latest example of Hong Kong playing a leading role in modernising the international transport sector. "The deal will be concluded imminently, which shows once again Hong Kong can help shape the transport industry internationally," he said.

"In addition to the MTRC, Octopus is a domestic brand name being recognised in the international marketplace, giving Hong Kong yet another boost."

Octopus issues the contact-less smart card called the "Octopus card", which uses a built-in micro-chip to store money electronically. Since its launch in Hong Kong in 1997, the system has been a huge success and has extended beyond its primary use of paying public transport fares - including trains, buses, ferries and mini-buses - to shopping, paying car parking fees and operating as a security access card.

MTRC has advised on about 300 projects in more than 20 cities including the UK, Australia, Singapore, the Chinese mainland, India and Korea. "Around the world, MTRC is the consultant with the most extensive experience in metro railway systems," Mr So said.
