The recently merged houseware, gifts and premium fairs attracted the largest ever number of buyers underlining Hong Kong's importance as the region’s sourcing hub and trade fair capital.

More than 62,000 people including 24,000 from outside Hong Kong visited the twin fair attended by over 3,800 exhibitors from around the world.

Buyer attendance was up 10 per cent more than last April's Hong Kong Gift & Premium Fair which was also organised by the Trade Development Council (TDC).

Chairman of the combined fair's organising committee Jeffrey Lam said: "Current conditions bode well for Hong Kong. Overseas inventories are low, and shops across the world need to replenish supplies and stock up urgently for their Christmas sales.

"Buyers are looking for value-for-money products with exquisite designs to fill the shop shelves. With 3,800 exhibitors, the twin fair is a premier sourcing opportunity not to be missed by serious buyers," Mr. Lam added.

One serious buyer who has been coming to the two fairs for many years is Vivienne Ellis, president of Gift & Houswares Australia, an association of 1,800 companies. Ms Ellis said she has been sourcing from Hong Kong for the past 25 years. "The two fairs constitute my single most important buying trip for the year. In all the years I've been here, I've never left without securing one new supplier. I have been to fairs all over the world but Hong Kong is the one I keep coming back to."

Packed trade fair calender

Looking ahead to the autumn months, TDC's schedule is packed. Two mega fairs are taking place in September and October -Watch & Clock (3-7 September) and Electronics (13-16 October). September also sees Filmart - Asia's very own Cannes. It looks set to be a great event. Asia is the latest hot property in the film world. Hollywood is clamouring to work with Asian partners.

Visiting trade fairs in Hong Kong remains one of the most successful ways to see what China has to offer. In the past two years, Chinese buyers and exhibitors have increased by 60 and 74 per cent respectively. Hong Kong is not called the trade fair capital of Asia for nothing.
