Australian companies are looking towards Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region to capture new business opportunities and joint venture partners, according to members of the "Advance Cairns Trade Mission to China" delegation.
A delegation of six Australian business leaders from North Queensland, including Mayor of Cairns Kevin Byrne, visited Hong Kong, Guangzhou and Shanghai to develop trade relations and business partnerships between the two regions. The trip was sponsored by the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Advance Cairns, a non-profit agency for economic development within the Cairns region.
The delegation represented different industry sectors including education, mining, manufacturing, finance and food export.
"Hong Kong is an important business and financial centre for Australia in Asia, a key trading partner and a leading source of investment," said Mr Byrne. "Cairns is the major commercial business and services centre for the region of Tropical North Queensland, with world-class infrastructure such as Cairns International Airport and Cairns Seaport. There are many opportunities for partnership."
Australian Airlines, a Qantas subsidiary, operates weekly direct Hong Kong- Cairns flights. Around 190,000 Hong Kong residents visited Australia in 2002, with 30,000 of these visiting Cairns.
