UU's vice chancellor Professor Gerry McKenna said Hong Kong is central to the University's Asia Pacific strategy. "Our new office in Hong Kong will enable the University to consolidate and expand our international activities. It will also serve as a base for further developments in the region. "The Hong Kong regional office will build on the strong relationship forged by UU with its Chinese partner institutions over the past two decades, and will work to create new opportunities for collaboration projects," added Professor McKenna. Mike Rowse director general of investment promotion at InvestHK said Hong Kong's students and business community would benefit from the University's intensified activities here including the development of technology and knowledge transfer. "This will help upgrade the quality of our workforce," said Mr Rowse. With more than 1,000 alumni in Hong Kong, UU is strong in both Biomedical Sciences and Celtic Studies. The education market in Hong Kong is extremely vibrant. The UK tops the list of countries in offering non-local higher and professional education courses. As at November 2003, of the 904 registered and exempted non-local higher and professional education courses provided here for over 60,000 students, the UK offered 470 courses representing a market share of 52 per cent.
