Swiss-based watchmaker Ulysse Nardin opened its first Asia flagship store in Hong Kong joining a recent wave of the world's best known luxury brands in establishing flagship bases in the SAR

Managing director of Ulysse Nardin, Marc Rogivue, said: "Hong Kong is and remains the centre of Asia. It is centrally located within North and South-East Asia, has an excellent and stable infrastructure, an inviting economy and low bureaucracy.

"Since Hong Kong serves as the gateway to the mainland, this offers us an excellent and strategic position for penetrating the mainland market, which will become even more important in the years to come."

Ulysse Nardin produces some of the world's most complex timepieces which may require detailed explanations from the 10 staff members of the Hong Kong store. The company has increasingly set up its own showrooms and "shops-in-shops" operated in cooperation with its retailers.

Mr Rogivue said the company is launching its brand new Sonata watch from its Hong Kong store.

Simon Galpin, associate director-general of investment promotion at Invest Hong Kong said Hong Kong is the ideal place for retailers to build brand awareness and to showcase their products to the local market and tourists. "In addition to having the second highest purchasing power in Asia, consumers in Hong Kong are sophisticated and fashion conscious. They always appreciate new high quality products."
