Hong Kong is in the mood to celebrate the holiday season as retailers and hotels report brisk sales and holiday bookings. Dazzling lights and colourful decorations blaze on buildings around the world famous Victoria Harbour as the number of visitors continue to flood into Hong Kong with Chinese mainland tourists topping the list.

To attract more tourists, the 'Symphony of Lights', a choreographed light and sound show will be staged against the Victoria Harbour backdrop from January 17 and will become a regular tourist attraction in 2004.

According to the executive director of the Travel Industry of Hong Kong the number of tourists arriving in the SAR over Christmas is expected to rise by 10 per cent compared to the same period last year while the number of mainland tourists was expected to record a 20 per cent rise.

Strong economic figures reported in the past few months show that Hong Kong is bouncing back more sharply than expected. Consumer confidence is also improving and the rosy outlook is attracting overseas companies to set up regional headquarters or establish a presence in the SAR.
