| IP protection, Cepa lure luxury goods to Hong Kong ( 26/02/2004 ) | |||||||||
Elizabeth Ponsolle des Portes, chief executive of Comite Colbert, the organisation that promotes a "French lifestyle on an international stage", said Hong Kong works closely with France on IP protection rights as "we have the same concerns." Ms Ponsolle de Portes said many French brands have had a presence in Hong Kong for a long time and because of the French Government's initiative in promoting "Year of China" in France, there is also enhanced interest in China. "With the Cepa free trade pact, I see more French brands establishing a presence or accelerating their expansion in China. There is a huge potential market for luxurious French brands in China, and as we say in French, tomorrow will sing for us," added Ms Ponsolle de Portes on the potential of French companies in the mainland. Comite Colbert which counts among its members well-known names like Baccarat, Chanel, and Champagne Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin, has been working on IP protection rights for a long time. Ms Ponsolle de Portes said the organisation was heavily involved in the formulation and introduction of a piece of French legislation known as the "Longuet Law" in 1994. "When you walk through Paris, you would not see any counterfeit goods because of enforcement of this law," said Ms Ponsolle de Portes. Comite Colbert started in 1954 with 12 companies. Now celebrating its 50th anniversary, it has 65 companies that are known throughout the world.
