Trade and investment promotion are a "positive sum game" according to author and consultant Edith Scott, Principal of Enright, Scott and Associates.

"When you promote exports from one location in Asia, you promote the exports of others too," Ms Scott told over 50 delegates attending the 17th Asian Trade Promotion Forum (ATPF) in Hong Kong recently.

Ms Scott explained that production value chains were fragmenting because of globalisation, the Internet and other forces of change, and that trade was linking co-production all around Asia.

High-level directors of trade promotion organisations from 18 countries and regions attended the forum, which was themed "Embracing Change, Creating Opportunities". They were meeting to discuss new opportunities for upgrading capacity, skills and recruiting new talent. Methods of increasing customer satisfaction, developing e-commerce and new opportunities from the Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement (Cepa) for trade promotion organisations were also on the agenda

Delegates from Australia, China, the Philippines, Thailand, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal, Singapore, Macau, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Mongolia, Indonesia, New Zealand, Chinese Taipei and Vietnam attended the forum.

Financial Secretary Henry Tang gave a welcoming address at the inaugural ceremony, and Secretary for Commerce, Industry and Technology John Tsang hosted a cocktail reception at Government House for the delegates.

"The forum is an opportunity to get together and exchange views on how to provide a better service for our clients in different economies," said TDC chairman Peter Woo, speaking at a Welcome Gala dinner hosted by TDC.

Established in 1987, the ATPF is a gathering of trade promotion organisations in the Asian Region and currently has 21 members. Its objective is to enhance trade in the region through information exchange, implementation of cooperative projects and strengthening networks among members.
