International rugby event lines up crowds in Hong Kong (15/03/2004)

Sevens tournament

The world’s leading sevens rugby superpowers will descend on Hong Kong once again for the Cathay Pacific / Credit Suisse First Boston Hong Kong Sevens 2004, to be held 26 - 28 March at the Hong Kong Stadium.

This year’s line-up features returning Hong Kong Sevens champions England, as well as South Africa, New Zealand and Australia, and a debut performance from Georgia.

The Hong Kong Sevens is widely recognized as the premier tournament in the International Rugby Board (IRB) international sevens circuit, and is expected to be a sell-out event this year. More than 40,000 people from around the world attend the three-day event, which is not only a world-class sporting event but also a vital place for networking.

Many multinational companies and banks use the event as a marketing tool, and take advantage of corporate hospitality “boxes” to entertain clients.

The social side of the event is also a huge success, with a carnival atmosphere pervading the city over the entire weekend. The “South Stand” of the Hong Kong stadium is famous for its rowdy ambiance and is where the not-so-shy and retiring spectators can often be found in fancy dress, wigs and painted faces.

This year’s event is the 29th year of sevens rugby in Hong Kong, and the Hong Kong Rugby Football Union (HKRFU) will celebrate next year’s 30th anniversary by hosting the IRB’s 2005 Rugby World Cup Sevens, becoming the first international rugby union to host two world cup sevens events.
