Hong Kong's MTR Corporation (MTRC) recently signed a memorandum of understanding with two Beijing firms to jointly build and run an underground railway in the city in preparation for the 2008 Olympic Games.
MTRC, Beijing Infrastructure Investment Co Ltd and Beijing Capital Group will build the 28.65 km Beijing Metro Line 4 which will form the main north-south artery of Beijing city. The metro line is expected to be open for service before the Games.
MTRC's managing director, operations and business development, Phil Gaffney, said MTRC was "honoured to be involved with a key event with worldwide attention."
The MTRC, majority owned by the SAR Government, had said its Airport Express and its over 2 decades rail operation experience would put it in good stead to transfer its know-how in time for the 2008 Olympics.
The MTRC which carries more than 2.3 million passengers daily on its 88 kilometre network in Hong Kong, started providing consultancy services in the mainland, Asia and Europe since 1998. Besides Beijing, the Corporation is currently providing services to nine mainland cities including Shenzhen and Shanghai. The company earlier signed its first railway investment to help develop Line 4 of the Shenzhen metro.
It is also vying for a new HK$7 billion tram (US$899 million) system in Liverpool in north England and a franchise to build a railway costing up to HK$9.86 billion (US$1.26 billion) in Vancouver, Canada, linking the airport with the city centre.
