New Zealand and Australian contemporary and abstract art is helping Hong Kong become an international arts hub, thanks to the efforts of New Zealander Belinda Corder Kruger, founder and managing director of Art Lease.
Art Lease supplies high quality original art, including paintings and sculptures, for sale or lease to corporate clients. Leasing offers the client more flexibility as they can rotate artwork as often as desired - an attractive concept for busy areas like five-star hotel lobbies, airport lounges or conference rooms in upmarket office buildings.
"Art is all about whether you like a piece or not," said Ms Kruger, whose clients include Cathay Pacific, Goldman Sachs, the Intercontinental Hotel, numerous law firms and IFC Management Co Ltd. "Our portfolio has a choice of more than 300 artists, and there is something for everyone. We find that our clients often get braver and more adventurous, the longer they use our services!"
Exciting arts hub
Art Lease's portfolio comprises mostly contemporary and abstract art, including well-known Kiwi artists Janet Muir and Rona Ngahuia Osbourne. Also popular are artists from the UK, US, Hong Kong, China, and elsewhere in the Asia-Pacific region, including some stunning pieces from Malaysian Eric Chan.
Ms Kruger manages a team of international art consultants who advise clients on recommended artwork depending on taste, budget and space available. Marble and corrugated iron sculptures, glass pieces and wall murals are alternatives to traditional canvases for the more courageous customer.
"Hong Kong people like modern, colourful pieces, which is natural when living in a busy city," said Ms Kruger. "The arts scene is constantly developing here. New galleries are opening all the time, and the government is sponsoring new art initiatives in the West Kowloon Cultural District Project - hopefully we will see many more sculptures around the city. Art Walk (a sponsored walk around Hong Kong galleries for charity) is becoming more and more popular every year.
"Hong Kong is definitely becoming an exciting arts hub for the region," Ms Kruger added.
Art Lease is opening offices in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta in the next few months.
