Hong Kong is developing into a regional wine trading and distribution centre with one of the most sophisticated consumer markets in the world, according to industry experts.
The world's biggest wine competition, the International Wine Challenge of Asia, was held in Hong Kong recently at the new Le Meridien Cyberport Hotel. Judging of around 900 wines specially chosen for the Asian market took place at the event, which has become known as "The Oscars of the wine world". Entries included wines from Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, Chile, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Canada, US, Austria and Germany.
"This challenge is specifically tailored to the Asian market. New Zealand and South African wine is on the increase - there is more sophistication, variety and availability from these countries than ever before," said joint chairman of the Challenge, Robert Joseph.
New Zealand wine is becoming increasingly popular in Hong Kong, according to New Zealand Consul-General Frank Wilson, one of the guests attending the challenge.
Kiwi wine maker Phyll Pattie of Ata Rangi wines agrees. "We received so many requests for our wine from customers living in Hong Kong that we decided to begin distributing here last month," said Ms Pattie. "There is an increasing demand for pinot noir as consumers are becoming more educated. And also, it goes very well with Asian cuisine!"

Ata Rangi's pinot noir, which was awarded a Silver Medal at the International Wine Challenge, is currently listed on the prestigious Hong Kong Jockey Club wine list.
Other winners from New Zealand included Fairhill Downs Pinot Noir (Gold Medal), Daniel Schuster Omihi Hills Selection Pinot Noir (Silver Medal) and Mud House Chardonnay (Bronze Medal).
"Hong Kong is an excellent place to do business for New Zealand wine makers, due to its sophisticated consumer base, business and transportation network, and superb investment and trade environment," said director of the International Wine Centre and co-chairman of the Wine Challenge, Mr Simon Tam. "New Zealand fine wines already have well-established brands in this market. Hong Kong has a unique East meets West culture and is a fantastic location for international companies."
