IGI's laboratory in Antwerp will train graders for the company's new laboratory in Hong Kong
The International Gemological Institute (IGI), one of the world's foremost authorities independent certification and valuation of gemstones and fine jewellery, is opening an identification and grading laboratory in Hong Kong in November.

Marc Brauner, IGI's worldwide chief laboratory officer, who will be managing the new IGI laboratory is hiring local Hong Kong graduate gemologists and Fellows of the British Gemological Association as diamond graders. They will be trained in IGI's headquarters in Belgium.

Mr Brauner said Hong Kong is a platform to monitor developments in the Chinese mainland. "Hong Kong is not only the most important trading centre in the region, it is the model city for the mainland and the major diamond and jewellery trading platform in the Asia Pacific region. That is why we strongly believe everything has to start from Hong Kong.

"Furthermore, we have seen a tremendous increase in demand for IGI certified diamonds and jewellery items in Hong Kong and its re-export markets. We are convinced that countries like Taiwan, Singapore, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Korea and the Philippines will benefit greatly from IGI's presence in Hong Kong."

IGI Hong Kong will be a full-service facility with state-of-the-art equipment for servicing diamond dealers, jewellery manufacturers, jewellers and consumers. It will offer diamond and gemstone identification, certification and testing reports on loose stones and finished jewellery.

IGI was established in 1975 and is located in Antwerp, New York, Toronto, Los Angeles, Bangkok, Mumbai, Tokyo and Dubai.
