The best of Australian film talent will be showcased live in Hong Kong from 11 -19 September during the 2004 Commonwealth Bank Australian Film Festival. The festival promises a wide variety of genres including horror, drama, action, romance and humour, from a diverse mix of films by award-winning Australian actors, directors and writers.

Tracy Hansen, Director of Public Affairs at the Australian Consulate-General Hong Kong, said, "Australian films are popular because they provide a refreshing alternative to mainstream 'Hollywood-style' productions. They are often quirky and contain unique Australian vocabulary and humour and most of the themes are universal, so the stories appeal to a broad audience. The Festival helps people to understand more about Australian life and culture."

Various locations around Hong Kong will be screening nine award-winning Australian titles, including Oscar-winning director Adam Eliot's "claymation" Harvie Krumpet together with a trilogy of his earlier works, as a highlight of this year's festival.

Horror film enthusiasts will enjoy Undead, a sci-fi adventure written, produced and directed by twin brothers Peter and Michael Spierig. The movie, internationally acclaimed for its outstanding visual effects, has been sold to 31 countries so far.

The legend of Australia's most renowned bushranger appears once again in Ned Kelly 2003 starring Heath Ledger, Naomi Watts and Geoffrey Rush.

Japanese Story won eight Australian Film Institute Awards, including Best Film, Best script, Best direction, Best Cinematography and Best Actress (Toni Collette).

The Commonwealth Bank Australian Film Festival is organised by the Australian Consulate-General Hong Kong, and sponsored by Qantas Airways, ABC Asia Pacific and House of Sirens.
