| David Werner explains why Hong Kong is the perfect testing ground for emerging data technology |
|
David Werner, managing director of innerWireless Asia Ltd, came to Hong Kong from the US in 1998 to design and install communication and operations technology in several hospitals and medical units. He also helped to convert a missile facility in Northern China into a modern hospital with state-of-the-art scanning equipment. Recently, he has been involved with designing high-speed wireless technology systems for award winning Hong Kong buildings.
"Hong Kong is in really good shape when it comes to connectivity and high-speed wireless technology. In fact, Hong Kong probably leads the world in terms of the number, size and distribution of intelligent buildings and facilities equipped with high-speed wireless technology. There are very few other places where your mobile phone will work with the same reliability underground, in railway tunnels, lift lobbies or between tall buildings.
I'm particularly happy right now on behalf of Hong Kong because the Intelligent Community Forum based in New York has just presented its annual Intelligent Building of the Year award to Cyberport. That makes Hong Kong properties a winner for three of the past five years. Hongkong Land Central portfolio was a winner in 2000 and Wharf New T&T Tower the following year. My lobbying efforts are largely responsible for making relevant forums outside of Asia aware of Hong Kong's advanced standing.
Communications network 'amazing'
The range and efficiency of the communications network in Hong Kong is amazing; even older buildings have the latest technology installed. It supports the corporate base and is one of the attractions for companies from all over the world to set up business and have access to a piece of the vast Asian economic pie. Not surprisingly, information technology is widely used in all sectors of trade from banking to logistics. The modern infrastructure makes working in Hong Kong an enjoyable experience, as does the ultra-modern and people-friendly Hong Kong International Airport for travelling to and from the city.
Hong Kong, with one of the highest mobile phone penetration rates in the world, is probably the most competitive wireless environment in the world. I am always impressed by the acceptance and utilisation of new technology, which has made Hong Kong Asia's key telecommunications centre.
The Office of Telecommunications Authority is responsible for much of this as they have pushed the regulatory envelope. This benefits mobile phone users by encouraging compatibility among the various wireless operators. The upshot is that a customer of one operator can send SMS messages to a customer of any of the other operators, and can switch his or her account at any time without changing the phone number to a different operator offering better rates or services.
Perfect testing ground
In many ways, Hong Kong is the perfect testing ground for emerging data services and wireless technologies with its high-rise buildings and hilly terrain. When it comes to deploying new wireless technologies, if a technology works in Hong Kong it will work anywhere.
Away from the city on the south side of Hong Kong Island there are some of the most beautiful walks and beaches to be found anywhere in Asia. The contrast between cityscape and diverse countryside is stunning.
Hong Kong is also an easy place to live in. Getting around is a breeze. The public transportation system including ferries is very efficient, making it easy to keep appointments, or for visiting any of the Outlying Islands. Tram services are a pleasant way to explore the city, while travelling on the Star Ferry across Victoria Harbour is always a memorable scenic distraction. The railway service is also cheap, comprehensive and efficient, and connects to most places you need to go."
