| Singapore niche travel firm opens in regional business centre ( 01/11/2004 ) | |||||||||
Founded 11 years ago in Singapore by Chang Theng Hwee and his wife Siew Yim, Country Holidays specialises in customised, high quality cultural and adventure trips throughout Asia and the world. It targets travellers seeking exotic and "off-the-beaten-track" destinations - rather than the mass tourism market. Its offerings include trekking in the Himalayas, Indochina, China and Central Asia, African safaris, South American eco-tours and polar voyages.
The Managing Director of Country Holidays, Chang Theng Hwee, said: "Since Country Holidays is selling a niche travel product, we need a market of mature and discerning travellers. With its sophisticated lifestyle and one of the highest disposable incomes in the region, Hong Kong possesses the key ingredients that make a good market for our agency."
"In addition, as Hong Kong continues to play its role as regional headquarters and financial centre, the expatriate population - an important customer segment for us - is likely to grow and provide increased business opportunities," he added.
In the beginning, Hong Kong will serve mainly as a sales office for products the agency has developed. Mr Chang also sees Hong Kong as a springboard to access the mainland market. He expects to grow the office into a product development centre for the Mainland market.
The Associate Director-General of Investment Promotion at Invest Hong Kong, John Rutherford, said the opening of the Country Holidays office reinforces Hong Kong's position as a regional and global centre for the tourism business. "With our high per capita income, cosmopolitan population and international lifestyle, Hong Kong is an attractive base for travel companies with unique product offerings."
He added that the recently announced Annual Survey of Regional Offices representing Overseas Companies in Hong Kong shows that Hong Kong remains the preferred location for foreign companies to manage their operations in Asia. All time high number of overseas operations points to ideal base
