World SME Expo is a trade platform for overseas companies to learn more about the Chinese mainland market and for mainland companies to network with international firms
Opportunities to network with small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) around the world, and the potential to either enter or expand into the Chinese mainland market, are some of the reasons why many SMEs are taking part in the World SME Expo to be held in Hong Kong.

Organised by the Trade Development Council (TDC), the SME Expo (November 16-18) is expecting 400 exhibitors to use Hong Kong as a trade platform to exchange information, network, learn more about the mainland and Asian markets, and for mainland companies to meet with international SMEs.

Maurice Ademe, director of international licensees of Ace Hardware, said his US company, one of the world's leading retailers in the hardware industry, is keen on further growing its business in the region. "We see China and the Asian markets as very dynamic and offering many opportunities for future growth for companies that either want to enter the retail market or expand their current business."

Ideal networking platform

The World SME Expo, added Mr Ademe, "is a great opportunity to meet with companies or entrepreneurs that have the desire to develop these real opportunities".

Winston Kan, Export Development Canada's regional manager Greater China, said his company which provides financing solutions to Canadian exporters is taking part as it realises the importance of SMEs. "We want to make ourselves more well-known to SMEs around the world advising that they can obtain financing to purchase Canadian goods."

"It is a great idea to have SMEs under one roof. SMEs are usually started by entrepreneurs and the Expo will allow all to share ideas, experiences and possibly do deals that will create opportunities for all the stakeholders," added Mr Kan.

Trading hubs unite

eBay, the world's online marketplace, is also one of the participants. Jenny Lam from public relations agency Upstream Asia explains eBay's presence. "eBay is a global marketplace and it is exciting that the World SME Expo will have representatives from around the world. eBay, like Hong Kong itself, provides a trading hub for the region and the world. The combination of SMEs, Hong Kong, the Expo, the Internet and eBay can contribute to the evolution of global trade."

Participants at the three-day event listen to industry leaders at conferences and seminars with topics ranging from "Competing in Globalised Markets" to "Enhancing Competition through Supply Chain Management" and "Successful Experiences in setting up Business in China."
