AmCham chairman Jon Zinke said Hong Kong is an ideal stepping stone for Chinese companies to reach the world

Hong Kong is in an ideal position to support Chinese mainland enterprises that may be looking towards the US as a place to invest, according to the new chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) in Hong Kong, Jon Zinke. He was speaking at his inaugural luncheon on 25 January.

"Hong Kong has always been a window into China for overseas companies. What we are finding now is that Chinese companies who previously never considered expanding in international markets are now doing so. Hong Kong has the potential to become the stepping-stone to the world for these companies. It is a business-friendly place, where it's easy for Chinese companies to "test the water" in an overseas environment, and where people speak their language," he said.

Mr Zinke explained that AmCham could offer tremendous resources to Chinese companies seeking expansion overseas, especially those looking to enter the US market.

"Hong Kong offers a variety of world-class services, and the Chamber offers access to tax expertise, legal expertise and other business advice. This is really something I'd like to develop this year," he added. "We will work with the Hong Kong government and businesses to help make Hong Kong China's trading window to the world."

Mr Zinke said that priorities for the Chamber this year include the protection of intellectual property rights in Hong Kong and the mainland, progress of constitutional development and improving the environment.

"Maintaining Hong Kong's status as a regional business hub depends in large part on its quality of life. The international business community needs to help Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta clean up the environment," he said.

Mr Zinke is a partner in the Hong Kong office of US attorneys Keesal, Young & Logan, and has previously been the 2004 vice chairman of the American Chamber, Co-chair and chairman of AmCham's Law Committee.

AmCham has also nominated a new president, Jack Maisano, to take over from Frank Martin when he retires in January.
