| City pumped up for prestigious World Cup rugby ( 01/03/2005 ) | |||||||||
"The Rugby World Cup Sevens will contribute enormously to Hong Kong's economy, attracting vast numbers of business travellers and rugby fans alike," said chairman of the Hong Kong Rugby Football Union (HKRFU) John Molloy. "A lot of companies organise their annual meetings in Hong Kong for the week before the Sevens, and use the tournament as an opportunity for corporate hospitality over the weekend. This year, demand for tickets at a corporate level has been enormous, with 120 corporate suites sold by October, and there are still waiting lists." Twenty-four of the world's best Sevens teams will compete in the tournament, including Australia, New Zealand, USA, Fiji and England (last year's winner of the Rugby 7s). Some 40,000 rugby fans will attend the event with more than 60 per cent of the crowd coming from overseas. After dark the party starts
"We are expecting a 20 per cent increase in traffic and business over last year's Sevens, with more overseas visitors due to the World Cup factor, and because Lan Kwai Fong is well known internationally as a dining and drinking hot-spot," Mr Loo said. "We are working with Cathay Pacific to provide an insert in the ticket pouch for overseas Rugby 7s package customers (air ticket and stadium ticket), as well as drinks and food promotions, partnering with Heineken. We'll also be hosting a huge after-Sevens party on the Sunday night in C-Club in Lan Kwai Fong." The event is expected to pump more than HK$200 million (US$25 million) into Hong Kong's hospitality and retail sectors. Related links | |||||||||
