Trade fair hub draws in crowds for hot sourcing season ( 01/05/2005 )

The 20th Hong Kong Gifts & Premium Fair showcases the products of over 3,500 exhibitors around the world
The summer sourcing season is underway as thousands of buyers and exhibitors around the world gathered at the 20th Hong Kong Gifts & Premium Fair (28 April-1 May), Asia's largest trade fair and the third largest of its kind in the world.

The fair, organised by the Trade Development Council (TDC), is a truly global event with over 3,500 exhibitors from 34 countries and regions and 14 group pavilions including Australia, Germany, Italy, the UK, India and the Chinese mainland.

The TDC has especially organised 80 buying missions with some 4,700 persons from 39 countries and regions visiting the fair. Key buyers include the leading media retailer in Germany, Weltbild Verlag GmbH, big retail chains like Pal, BALS, Hankyu and Don Quijote from Japan, as well as Hobby Lobby Stores and Home Shopping Channel from North America.

Varied choice, price competitive

Hong Kong's gifts and premium industry enjoyed excellent business as the rebound in 2003 gathered momentum in 2004. "Our total exports last year grew by 6 per cent to US$21 billion," said Jeffery Lam, Chairman of the Fair Organising Committee. "At the fair, visitors can see Hong Kong manufacturers' innovative designs ranging from price-competitive products to up-market merchandise." Buyers come from all corners of the globe

At the recently ended Hong Kong Houseware Fair (21-24 April) French buyer Philippe Tarde, director-general of mail catalogue company La Cantiniere, commented on the variety of products found in Hong Kong fairs. "I am here mainly because I realised that although I was buying from French companies, most of the products were made in the Chinese mainland. I decided to come here to check out the prices. I've found that the choice here is much more international than at European fairs," he said.

Hong Kong's international reputation as a sourcing hub is further reinforced in July when thousands of visitors will come for the Summer Sourcing Show for Gifts, Houseware and Toys (5-8 July), the Hong Kong Licensing Show (5-7 July) and Fashion Week Spring/Summer (12-15 July).

Next year, Hong Kong will further bolster its role as Asia's leading trade fair hub by staging eight new events. Six of the new fairs will be staged at the 66,000 square-metre Asia World-Expo site near the Hong Kong International Airport. Industries covered include printing and packaging; car parts; leisure vehicles; building materials; furniture; environmental technology; textile manufacturing and health care.
