Hong Kong's appeal as an international tourist and business destination will be further enhanced with the establishment of a new five-star Marriott Hotel to be located on the waterfront of the scenic Hong Kong International Airport's SkyCity.
To be completed by the second half of 2008, the hotel – a joint venture between Dragages HK (a subsidiary of France's Bouygues Construction) and Hong Kong-based Shun Tak Holdings – will feature 1,000 rooms and cost approximately HK$1 billion (US$128 million).
"The business environment in the area is expanding rapidly," said Paul Foskey, Marriott International Executive Vice-President. "This is not a standard airport hotel. The hotel's design will take full advantage of its waterfront location in SkyCity by offering excellent views of the South China Sea."
The Hong Kong SkyCity Marriott will have all the usual amenities for business travellers, and three distinct restaurants. It will also feature extensive recreational activities such as a health club with saunas, steam rooms and whirlpools.
Global trend-setter
One of the project's main goals is to meet the increasing demand for accommodation at HKIA and to alleviate the prices of high-end hotel rooms.
David J Pang, CEO of Airport Authority which is in charge of the SkyCity project, said: "Building the second hotel at HKIA marks another stride in the strategic development of SkyCity. We are at the forefront of a global trend whereby major airports are developed to become ‘airport cities' in their own right."
The hotel, located on the eastern side of the airport, is a key part of the 57-hectare SkyCity development which also includes the new exhibition facility at AsiaWorld-Expo, two office towers, a cross-border ferry terminal and a nine-hole golf course, all of which lend to the city-like feel of the premises.
The new Hong Kong Marriott in SkyCity looks to share in and boost the robust economies across Hong Kong, Macau, and the rest of the Pearl River Delta by attracting more business and recreational travellers to the region. It will also provide a timely supply of hotel rooms to meet the surging demand for accommodation at HKIA.
