The first quarter of 2007 promises to be an exciting time on the Hong Kong exhibition and trade fair calendar. Hardly have the two major international fairs – Hong Kong Toys and Games Fair and Hong Kong Fashion Week for Fall/Winter – ended and already, Asia’s trade fair capital is gearing up for more mega events.

The Hong Kong International Jewellery Show (6-10 March) and the glittering triple combination of the Hong Kong International Festival, FILMART and the Hong Kong Film Financing Forum which kick off on March 20 continue to enhance the city’s reputation as an international trade fair capital.

The International Jewellery Show has been growing steadily in recent years and the 2007 edition will feature over 2,200 exhibitors, representing a growth of 11 per cent. International representation widens to cover 42 countries and regions with new pavillions from Germany and Malaysia, making a record high of 20 group pavillions from all over the world.

Grand scale

"We are excited to have seen steady and healthy growth of this fair in its 24 year history and with the existing grand scale, we hope to extend the fair by one more day so that both buyers and exhibitors have more time to explore their interests, discuss business deals as well as network with new and old friends," said Benjamin Chau, Assistant Executive Director, Hong Kong Trade Development Council, the organiser of the show.

Two new product zones – antique jewellery and jade jewellery – will be introduced to add more sparkle. New York’s Windsor Jewelers Inc, one of the largest buyers of estate and signed jewellery in the world, is one of the exhibitors in the antique jewellery section.

Paul Lebetsky, Founder and President of Windsor Jewelers, explained that estate jewellery is defined as any jewellery manufactured before the present time, whereas antique jewellery is strictly over 100 years old. "So, estate jewellery can be Deco from the 1920s or Retro from the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s, and signed jewellery (pieces) have their own distinctive styles."

Showcase for Asia

Mr Lebetsky, who has been participating in Hong Kong trade shows for over 10 years, said the Hong Kong International Jewellery Show is the perfect opportunity to bring collectible antique and estate jewellery to Asia. "We have always found the Asian buyers do appreciate collectible items. We feel antique, estate and signed jewellery will appreciate in value because of its rarity and collectibility."

The triple header for film entrepreneurs and movie fans around the world - Hong Kong International Festival, FILMART and the Hong Kong Film Financing Forum - will further boost the city’s status as a film trade and film financing platform (Triple treat for movie buffs)
