When many other companies were concerned about Hong Kong's future in 1997, German-based Traxon Technologies had already seen the light at the end of the tunnel. In fact, it was helping to create that light, in a most innovative way.

"We opened a branch in Hong Kong in the mid nineties, and believed we were in a very advantageous situation, financially and otherwise, for handling production plants in the mainland," said Director of Products and Marketing, Malte Fromm.

"We were not concerned about the return of Hong Kong to the mainland; instead, we saw the chances and opportunities that this opened for business. We strengthened our ties with certified vendors in the mainland and consolidated our headquarters in Hong Kong," he added.

Traxon offers a full turnkey solution for LED lighting systems, and the company's unique displays can be seen in prestigious locations such as the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Tower Bridge in London (during London's first ever "Festival of Light"), Cirque du Soleil in Las Vegas, and many casinos, bars and restaurants spanning the globe, from Belfast to Tel Aviv to Nagoya.

Locally in Hong Kong, the company's state of the art technology and award winning designs can be seen in the Miramar Shopping Complex, and trendy bars M88, Solas, and Carat. Traxon's innovative displays and customised screens rocked the crowd at the opening party of the Hong Kong DIESEL store.

Initially, Traxon started with the financial and business management divisions and later expanded its Hong Kong engineering base whilst keeping the R&D in Germany. Traxon moved its headquarters to the Hong Kong Science and Technology Park (HKSTP) in 2005.

"We wanted to utilise the advanced resources offered by the HKSTP including common testing labs and R&D facilties with affliliated companies in the high tech industry," said Mr Fromm. "Traxon has expanded its base in Hong Kong which now comprises global marketing and an R&D division which works closely with the R&D base in Germany."

Mr Fromm said Hong Kong is an established international business centre which helps any company seeking business growth in a number of ways. "For us, this was the case through commonly accepted business rules, openness to foreign investment, ease of business establishment and growth. Hong Kong's economic freedom and taxation benefits put it ahead of many other metropoles in South East Asia.

"Whereas upsurging cities such as Shanghai and Beijing are getting increasingly popular among foreign investors, Hong Kong offers an already existing and proven infrastructure, which is being topped by an optimal business environment," said Mr Fromm.

"The proximity to resources in the mainland, but maintaining economic and political liberty, put Hong Kong's businesses in a preferred situation. In particular, the Hong Kong Science and Technology Park fosters high-tech development in a way that is currently not possible in developing cities such as Shanghai and Beijing which are not yet settled in all necessary business processes."
